TECHNICAL TAKEAWAYS:
Elite Scrambling VS Punishing Pinning And Passing
Other than Petr Yan styling on Deiveson Figueiredo with some beautiful trips the grappling in elite MMA was a bit thin last week. We’ll take a closer look at why that technique works so well in the premium section of this week’s newsletter. Before that I want to do a deep dive on WNO 25’s main event, Roberto Jimenez vs Kaynan Duarte.
Most recently Roberto Jimenez lost at CJI by heel hook. Jimenez’s relative lack of leg locking defense shouldn’t make you over look him though. He’s one of the most exciting grapplers in the sport.
Win or lose, Jimenez is always all out offense. From the jump he goes forward, passes, and hunts for acrobatic back takes.
Jimenez is loose passing. He’s holding Lo’s legs and walking side to side to find a way inside. Then he just dives into Lo to tripod pass. Roberto gets a leg inside and tries to knee slice. Lo sits up to push him off. Roberto grabs Lo’s waist, throws his opposite hook in, and forward rolls to complete the back take. | ![]() Roberto Jimenez - Francisco Lo |
Top or bottom, Roberto is really really hard to deal with. He’s fast, technical, and has a seemingly unlimited gas tank. Watch how he stops the much larger Nick Rodriguez’s attempt to pressure pass.
Rodriguez is driving into Jimenez’s legs looking for a body lock. Jimenez is fishing for grips and trying to pull on Rodriguez’s posture. Rodriguez is denying everything. What does Jimenez do? He just pushes the mountainous man off of him and scrambles to a reset position. | ![]() Nick Rodriguez - Roberto Jimenez |
Jimenez’s scrambling and work rate what makes his style clash against Kaynan Duarte so compelling.
Duarte been at the top of gi and no gi jiujitsu for half a decade. In 2019 he won the IBJJF and ADCC World Championships. For what its worth, Duarte’s IBJJF title was later stripped due to a drug test.
Duarte’s most recent ADCC run that was equally stifling and impressive. No one had an answer for his top game. It looked like he was made of mobile concrete.
Duarte pushes the hook down to go to headquarters. Then he hops to the other side to change the direction of his knee cut. While this is happening, Duarte is stuffing Schuardt’s hooks and holding his hip. When Schuardt tries to crunch in to attack a leg, Duarte pulls on his neck and settles in to chest to chest position to smother him. | ![]() Kaynan Duarte vs Daniel Schuardt |
In the tournament’s finals, Duarte folded the veteran Rafael Lovato Jr.’s guard like paper. Watch how direct and forceful his passing is. As soon as he locks his feet Lovato is completely stuck.
Duarte has his hands locked to pass. When he slides from side control to mount, Lovato turns to escape. Duarte just locks his feet under Lovato’s legs and now he’s stuck. Duarte gets a hard cross face and chair sits to the back. | ![]() Kaynan Duarte vs Rafael Lovato Jr. |
And when Duarte’s opponents did start to find space he jumped to submissions.
Duarte has feet locked so Schuardt goes flat to his back. Duarte looks for an arm triangle but Schuardt’s arm across his hips blocks Duarte’s progress. Schuardt bridges desperately so Duarte throws his leg over to lock the triangle. Duarte finishes with an arm lock. | ![]() Kaynan Duarte vs Daniel Schuardt |
When opponents tried to counter wrestle on the feet and the floor, Duarte would simply grab their head and crunched down on a guillotine choke.
Duarte is walking side to side while disrupting Moody’s hooks. He’s alternating between stepping to headquarters and pushing Moody towards an inversion. As soon as Moody sits up Duarte is on his head for the guillotine. | ![]() Kaynan Duarte vs Declan Moody |
So how exactly could this play out against Jimenez?
WHAT ELSE WAS WORTH WATCHING:
Duarte’s Path Through Jimenez’s Guard
A few years ago Jimenez suffered an uncharacteristically shocking loss at the hands of Gordon Ryan. The loss wasn’t necessarily shocking. What surprised everyone was how Ryan went right through Jimenez’s hyperactive guard.
Ryan is trying to steer Jimenez’s legs out of the way. Jimenez is kicking and pummeling his legs in maintain space. Ryan gets his hand to Jimenez’s far hip and puts his head down for what is called the J point camping position. Then Ryan steps into half guard and slows down to do his best work. | ![]() Gordon Ryan - Roberto Jimenez |
From half guard, Ryan next had to put Jimenez’s shoulders down.
Ryan locks his hands around Jimenez’s waists, puts his weight down, and flattens Jimenez. Ryan keeps his arm around Jimenez’s waist and secures a cross face. Then Ryan drops his shoulder on Jimenez for a hard cross face. | ![]() Gordon Ryan - Roberto Jimenez |
Then, Ryan only had to free his leg to mount Jimenez.
Ryan uses his right elbow to start to open Jimenez’s legs. Jimenez tries to hand fight. Ryan gets an under hook and locks his hands. Then he tripods up and uses his outside leg to free his trapped leg. To get to mount Ryan puts his shin over Jimenez’s hips and slides his knee over. | ![]() Gordon Ryan - Roberto Jimenez |
This isn’t exactly impossible for Duarte to replicate. He’s a juggernaut from top half. He does have another direct option to shut down Jimenez’s frenetic activity before they go to the mat. If Duarte can lock his hands around Jimenez on the feet he could shut Jimenez down before he ever gets going.
Rodriguez throws Jimenez by to grab a body lock. They fall. Rodriguez starts to pass and Jimenez gets onto his shoulder to roll into Rodriguez’s legs but they get reset in the middle of the mat. As Jimenez looks to roll Rodriguez changes his grip and walks to the back side. Rodriguez rolls Jimenez over to take his back and secure the match. | ![]() Nick Rodriguez - Roberto Jimenez |
If Jimenez can maintain space there’s no reason to doubt he can’t find Duarte’s back in a scramble. That’s where he does his best work. He creates a chaotic tsunami and drowns opponents while they’re struggling to see which way is up.
If Duarte can lock his hands around Jimenez on the feet, half guard, or headquarters he has the opportunity to hold Jimenez down and cook him. Then the match might look his historically dominant performance at ADCC 2024.

THE MOST IMPORTANT NEWS (you might have missed)
Last week we discussed how the UFC is moving into professional grappling. This weekend White announce they would start by launching a reality show. Click here to read & listen more.
Conor McGregor was found liable of sexually assaulting Nikita Hand. If you want a thorough explanation of the trial I recommend listening to this interview with Luke Thomas. Fair warning - it’s graphic.
Bellator and PFL look like they’re in trouble. This weekend many of their top fighters complained about not getting fights. PFL has yet to respond but I have heard rumblings they’re developing a plan internally of how to best proceed. If I had to guess why fighters aren’t getting fights there is one simple explanation; the organization is running out of money.
